Functioning of the HPA axis (hypothalamus - pituitary - adrenal glands)

The HPA axis is responsible for regulating the production of cortisol, called the "stress hormone", by the adrenal glands. In stressful situations, cortisol (as well as other hormones produced by the adrenal glands, including DHEA) regulate the body's ability to respond properly (such as fleeing or taking up other spontaneous physical activity).

Symptoms of HPA axis failure include:

  • chronic, persistent fatigue

  • irritability, depressed mood

  • recurring infections

  • gastroenterological problems (abdominal pain, diarrhea)

  • cravings for sweet foods (may be the reason why you are not losing weight as intended)

Diagnostics:

In our Institute, tests are performed to determine the daily level of cortisol (the material for the test is saliva) and the level of the DHEA hormone.

Treatment:

The treatment program is based on the results of laboratory tests and includes interventions aimed at improving the functioning of the HPA axis through appropriate supplementation (restoring the balance of the HPA axis, supporting the proper functioning of the adrenal glands) and maintaining the proper function of the HPA axis (interventions in the field of lifestyle medicine).

At Vitality, our treatment is guided by a program developed by the Kalish Institute of Functional Medicine in cooperation with Mayo Clinic, USA.
